Scripture for All
The World English Bible (WEB) represents an ambitious and generous vision: a complete English translation of Scripture in the public domain, freely available to everyone on earth. Unlike copyrighted translations whose use is restricted and sometimes costly, the WEB can be read, shared, quoted, translated, and distributed without any permission or licensing fee.
Building on the ASV
The WEB is based on the American Standard Version (1901), building upon that translation's foundation of literal accuracy while updating its language for modern readers. The translators made the conscious choice to avoid archaic constructions while maintaining the ASV's commitment to fidelity to the original texts.
A Revolutionary Distribution Model
What makes the WEB distinctive is not primarily its translation approach but its revolutionary distribution model. In the early internet era, the WEB's creators recognized that the greatest barrier to Bible reading in many parts of the world was not language but cost and access. By placing the translation in the public domain, they removed all economic and legal barriers.
Global Impact
The WEB has become instrumental in global Bible ministry. Missionaries can distribute it freely in any country. Bible apps include it without licensing costs. Translations into other languages often start from the WEB because its public domain status eliminates copyright complications. For churches in developing nations, the WEB has meant that congregations can access Scripture in English without cost barriers.
