Mission San Luis Rey

About this church

Mission San Luis Rey is an active Franciscan mission, Catholic worship site, retreat center, museum, cemetery, and National Historic Landmark in Oceanside. Founded in 1798 as the eighteenth of California’s twenty-one missions, it combines daily and weekend Mass with prayer, retreats, education, historic interpretation, Franciscan events, and hospitality for visitors.

Mass is celebrated Monday through Friday at noon in the Historic Mission Church. The adjacent Mission San Luis Rey Parish offers an 8:00 a.m. Mass Monday through Saturday. Weekend options include Saturday Mass at 4:00 p.m. and Spanish Mass at 6:00, plus Sunday Masses at 7:00 in the Historic Church; 8:00, 9:00 Spanish in the Historic Church, 10:00, noon Spanish, 5:00, and 7:00 Spanish in the Historic Church. Because some services use the modern parish complex and others the historic building, visitors should confirm the specific room. The Historic Church is open daily 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Museum hours are 10:00–4:00 with paid admission; church attendance is distinct from museum entry. Daytime and accessible parking are free. Public pages do not specify dress, nursery care, child check-in, Mass duration, livestreaming, or Reconciliation hours. Retreat guests have exclusive use of St. Clare Chapel.
