St. Augustine by-the-Sea Episcopal Church

About this church

St. Augustine by-the-Sea Episcopal Church celebrates Holy Communion Sundays at 8 and 10:30 a.m. The 8 a.m. Rite I service uses formal Elizabethan English, meditative silence, and harp accompaniment. The principal 10:30 Rite II liturgy uses modern language with organ, choir, and congregational hymns and streams on YouTube. Everyone is invited to receive Communion, and healing ministers offer individual prayer, laying on of hands, and anointing afterward. Bulletins print the service, music, prayers, and cues for sitting, standing, or kneeling. Clothing ranges from jeans to business attire or traditional Sunday best.

Sunday School meets during 10:30 worship, with children rejoining their families for Communion; a nursery for infants and toddlers opens during services. Most Sundays also include an adult class between the two liturgies. The church faces a city parking structure where Sunday parking is free until 12:30 p.m.; nearby metered street spaces are limited. Worship is supported by adult and teen acolytes, readers, altar preparation, and lay ministers who serve the chalice and take Communion to people unable to attend. Advance questions may include children’s ages and safeguards, step-free access, hearing devices, and how long YouTube keeps each liturgy.
