St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church

About this church

St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church is a downtown Elkhart parish known locally by its red doors, 1895 sanctuary, stained glass, and Casavant organ. Its Sunday liturgy brings together Scripture, preaching, prayer, congregational movement, and Holy Communion, alternating every two weeks between traditional and contemporary styles. All baptized Christians are invited to receive Communion; others may come forward for a blessing. Dress ranges from suits to jeans, and an elevator provides access to the sanctuary.

Sunday worship begins at 9:00 a.m. in person and online. An usher can provide a bulletin and help visitors navigate the building, while adults exploring Christianity or the Episcopal tradition may ask about confirmation classes that ordinarily meet after Mass. Community service is unusually visible here: the food pantry, founded in the early 1990s, opens Wednesday and Saturday from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. through the rear entrance and now occupies much of the lower level. Weekly and monthly fellowship includes Thursday Bible and Breakfast at 8:00 a.m., a first-Monday Euchre club, a second-Wednesday women’s luncheon, and a third-Thursday online book club. The congregation also collects school supplies and maintains a Giving Tree with clothing for neighbors in need.
