About this church
Christ the Servant Lutheran Church celebrates Holy Communion Sunday at 9:30 a.m. in Montgomery Village, with Zoom participation available through a weekly emailed link. Sunday School and Adult Forum follow worship, and a Tuesday Bible study at 12:15 discusses the coming Sunday's readings. The liturgy is rooted in Lutheran tradition but varies widely: services may include incense and processions, jazz or rock music, or texts written by Confirmation youth. A printed bulletin points to hymns and service elements in Evangelical Lutheran Worship, and nearby worshipers are encouraged to help newcomers follow along.
The ELCA congregation describes itself as progressive, sacramental, and committed to the full inclusion and equity of LGBTQIA+ people. Dress is comfortable and informal, and membership includes former Catholics, Baptists, Episcopalians, and lifelong Lutherans. Children are welcomed even when noisy, with activity bags available. Offerings may include money for the congregation and World Hunger as well as food for local distribution. The church's environmental care is unusually tangible: youth built a vegetable garden, a wheelchair-accessible memorial garden provides space for prayer and ashes, and a labyrinth is used during Holy Week and animal blessings. Facilities use LED lighting and reusable tableware, while gardens provide habitat for local wildlife.
