About this church

The Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption is both a Fall River parish church and the mother church of the Catholic diocese. Built of native granite in the Gothic style, it was dedicated in 1855, consecrated in 1901, and designated the cathedral when Pope Pius X created the Diocese of Fall River in 1904. Its 190-foot spire and stained-glass windows from several periods make the building itself an important part of the visit.

The nave windows were installed in 1891, sanctuary windows followed in 1915, and three lancet windows above the choir loft were added in 1952 to depict the Assumption. Two adjoining chapels include a Blessed Sacrament chapel where daily Mass is offered and a bishop’s chapel above the diocesan crypt.
