St Joseph Catholic Church

About this church

St. Joseph Catholic Church serves greater Ypsilanti from a rural setting six miles south of the city. Sunday Masses are celebrated at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., with Wednesday Mass at 9:30 a.m. Holy-day times appear separately on the parish calendar. The church is at 9425 Whittaker Road, set between pine trees and farmland, and describes itself as a small but full-service parish despite its pastor also serving at Sacred Heart Major Seminary.

Parish life includes weekly children’s religious education, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, adult formation, three weekly opportunities for Eucharistic Adoration, and Saint Joseph Classical, a Wednesday homeschool-support program for grades one through eight. The parish’s local roots reach to 1890, when its first church was built in Whittaker; it became a canonical parish in 1904, and the current church was completed and dedicated in 1967. Liturgical roles range from altar serving and reading to ushering and extraordinary Communion ministry, with training provided. Visitors should consult the calendar before a holy day or Adoration visit because those times are more variable than the regular Mass schedule.
