St. John in the Wilderness

About this church

St. John in the Wilderness is a historic Episcopal parish in Flat Rock whose mission joins knowing God in Jesus Christ with sharing his love and serving the world. The present church dates to 1852, and the parish identifies itself as the oldest in the Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina. Music, fellowship, formation, pastoral care, outreach, and the historic churchyard all contribute to a parish life that is both rooted in place and active in the wider community.

Holy Eucharist is celebrated Sunday at 8:45 and 11:00 a.m., with both services livestreamed. Rite I is used during Lent and Advent and Rite II during the rest of the year. Nursery care for children through age four runs from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; formation for youth and adults begins at 10:00. Wednesday brings a 10:30 a.m. healing service and 4:30 p.m. Evening Prayer. Morning Prayer is offered Monday through Thursday at 8:30 both in the Atrium Chapel and on Facebook. The actual worship address is 1895 Greenville Highway; 1905 is the adjoining parish house and office address, so the location correction below directs visitors to the church rather than the office.
