St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church

About this church

St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church celebrates Orthros at 8:30 a.m. and Divine Liturgy at 10:00 on Sundays at 429 High Street NE in Warren. The services run as one continuous sequence, so worshipers may still be entering, lighting candles, venerating icons, or praying near the iconostasis after Orthros has begun. The church’s visitor guide explains that standing is customary through much of Orthodox worship, while seating remains available when needed.

The parish belongs to the Metropolis of Pittsburgh within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and under the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Its description of worship stresses continuity across places and centuries: Scripture, ancient prayers, chant, incense, icons, and the Eucharist express one Orthodox faith rather than a newly designed service. Visitors should expect movement, sensory worship, and a longer liturgical morning rather than interpreting activity as interruption. Beyond the services, ministries include youth, spiritual formation, outreach, parish governance, and Philoptochos, the women’s philanthropic organization that supports charitable work and parish life. For someone new to Orthodoxy, St. Demetrios provides uncommon practical guidance: arrive for Orthros or by the 10:00 Liturgy, dress respectfully, stand as able, and observe the community’s sacramental rhythm without needing prior familiarity.
