The Names of God
In Scripture, God reveals Himself one name at a time — Creator, Provider, Shepherd, the God who is with us, the great I AM. Over eight days, trace these names and titles through the Bible and discover that each one is a window into His character, and that every name finds its fullness in Jesus Christ.

Elohim — God the Creator
Genesis 1The Bible opens with a name: 'In the beginning God created.' The Hebrew is Elohim — the God of overflowing power who speaks light, sky, sea, and living things into being. He is mighty enough to make worlds, yet attentive enough to call it all 'very good.' Read slowly today and let the One who made everything be the first word of your day.
Yahweh — the LORD, the I AM
Exodus 3At the burning bush Moses asks God His name, and God answers, 'I AM THAT I AM.' This is Yahweh — the LORD — the God who is, eternal and self-existent, the source of life rather than its recipient. Yet this boundless Name bends low to a shepherd in the desert and to a people in bondage. The God who holds all things chooses to know you, and to be known by you.
El Shaddai — God Almighty
Genesis 17When Abram is ninety-nine and the promise seems impossible, God appears as El Shaddai — God Almighty. 'Walk before me, and be thou perfect.' The same power that set the stars in place can make a barren life fruitful. Where you have stopped hoping, the Almighty has not stopped working. Bring Him the promise that feels long overdue.
Jehovah-Jireh — the LORD Will Provide
Genesis 22On Mount Moriah, with the knife raised over Isaac, God provides a ram in the thicket. Abraham names the place Jehovah-jireh — 'The LORD Will Provide.' The provision came not before the climb but in the moment of need. Trust is not knowing how He will provide; it is believing that He will. The God who saw Abraham's need sees yours.
The LORD My Shepherd
Psalm 23David, once a shepherd himself, dares to call the LORD his Shepherd. 'I shall not want.' He leads, He restores, He walks with us through the darkest valley, and goodness and mercy follow us all the way home. This is not God at a distance but God beside you — rod and staff in hand, a table spread before you. Let Him lead today.
Immanuel — God With Us
Matthew 1An angel tells Joseph the child shall be called Immanuel — 'God with us.' The Name promised long before through Isaiah now has a face, a cradle, a heartbeat. In Jesus, God does not send help from afar; He comes near, fully God and truly one of us. Whatever you carry today, you do not carry it alone. He is with us — and His name is Jesus, 'for he shall save his people from their sins.'
The Good Shepherd
John 10The Shepherd of Psalm 23 now stands among us and speaks: 'I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.' He knows His own by name, and they know His voice. A hired hand flees when danger comes; the Good Shepherd lays down His life. Listen today for the Voice that calls you by name, and follow where He leads.
The Great I AM
John 8Every name has been leading here. To the crowd Jesus says, 'Before Abraham was, I am' — taking up the very Name spoken at the burning bush. The Creator, the Provider, the Shepherd, God with us: all of it gathered into the One standing before them. The eternal I AM has a face, and it is the face of Christ. Worship Him today, and let His Name be the last word of your day as it was the first.
