The King Comes Riding

Matthew 21

The week opens with a procession. Jesus enters Jerusalem not on a war-horse but on a borrowed donkey, and the crowds spread their garments in the road, crying, "Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord" (v. 9). Here is a King who comes in gentleness, lowly and bringing peace. He receives their praise knowing all that lies ahead. As the week begins, welcome Him into the city of your own heart, and let your praise be glad and unguarded.

2

Zeal for His Father's House

Mark 11

Jesus enters the temple and overturns the tables of those who had made worship a marketplace. "Is it not written," He says, "My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves" (v. 17). His love is not soft on what cheapens the holy. He longs for His Father's house to be a place of prayer for all peoples. Ask Him today to enter the courts of your own life and turn over whatever has crowded out room for God.

Words That Will Not Pass Away

Matthew 24

On the Mount of Olives, looking out over the city, Jesus speaks of things to come — wars and famines, nations shaken, the day of His return. Yet the aim is not fear but readiness. "Heaven and earth shall pass away," He says, "but my words shall not pass away" (v. 35). And so He charges them, "Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come" (v. 42). Live today as one who is awake and waiting — faithful in the small things, with your lamp trimmed and your heart turned toward His coming.

4

This Is My Body

Luke 22

On the night He was betrayed, Jesus gathers His friends for a final meal. He takes bread, gives thanks, and breaks it: "This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me" (v. 19). The cup, He says, is the new covenant in His blood. And the One worthy of every honor moves among them as the servant of all. Sit at this table today. Receive the love that gives itself wholly for you, and let it shape how you give yourself to others.

5

Not My Will, But Thine

Matthew 26

In the garden of Gethsemane, sorrowful unto death, Jesus falls on His face and prays, "O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt" (v. 39). Here love is tested in the dark, and chooses obedience. To His sleeping friends He says gently, "the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak" (v. 41). Bring Him the cup you would rather not drink. Watch with Him a while, and learn to pray those surrendered words as your own.

6

Before the Powers of the World

John 18

Betrayed and arrested, Jesus is led bound from one judgment hall to another. Yet He stands strangely in command, even before Pilate. "To this end was I born," He says, "and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth" (v. 37). Falsely accused, He does not strike back; He had already said, "the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?" (v. 11). Watch how He carries Himself amid the cruelty, and let His quiet steadfastness steady you when you are wronged.

7

It Is Finished

John 19

They lead Him out and crucify Him. Mockery, nails, darkness, thirst — He bears it all without striking back, and even from the cross He tends to His mother and the disciple He loved (vv. 26-27). Then, with the work of redemption complete, He speaks the words that ring through every age: "It is finished" (v. 30). Not a cry of defeat but a shout of victory. Linger here today. Behold what your salvation cost, and behold the love that gladly paid it.

8

He Is Risen

John 20

In the early dark, Mary comes to the tomb and finds the stone rolled away. Weeping, she does not recognize Him — until He speaks her name: "Mary." She turns and answers, "Rabboni" (v. 16). The grave is empty; the Lord is alive. To all who will believe without seeing, He pronounces a blessing (v. 29). The week that ended in a tomb opens now into endless morning. Hear Him call your own name today, and let the joy of the risen Christ become the song your whole life sings.
