What Does 1 Chronicles 12:19 Mean?
The writer recalls an earlier episode: when David had been marching with the Philistine army against Saul, the Philistine commanders grew suspicious and sent him home, fearing he might turn on them and rejoin Saul. Around that time, men of Manasseh came over to David's side. God providentially kept David out of a battle against his own people.
Even the suspicion of pagan lords served God's purpose, sparing David from fighting against Saul and Israel. The Lord guided events so that His anointed would not be stained by such a battle.
