What Does 1 Chronicles 17:12 Mean?
In a single verse the two houses meet. David's son will build God a house, the temple David longed to raise, and in return God will establish that son's throne forever. The exchange is now complete: the king who wished to give God a dwelling is given an everlasting throne instead. Solomon would fulfill the first half by building the temple in Jerusalem.
But the word for ever cannot rest on Solomon, whose throne did not last. It strains forward to a King whose reign has no end. The everlasting throne promised here is the same throne the Scriptures announce as belonging to Christ, who builds a greater temple, the living house of His people, and reigns in a kingdom that shall never be destroyed. God's for ever is always larger than the moment it is first spoken into.
