What Does 1 Chronicles 17:18 Mean?
David reaches the end of his eloquence. What more can he possibly say to add honor to what God has freely given? He lays down his words and rests in a simple truth: Thou knowest thy servant. God knows David more deeply than David knows himself, and before such knowledge there is nothing left to argue or earn. The prayer turns from speech to surrender.
There is great peace in being fully known by God. We need not explain ourselves to Him or build a case for our worth; He sees us entirely and loves us still. When words fail, as they finally must before such grace, the soul can simply rest in being known. To say Thou knowest thy servant is to lay our whole self, with all its smallness, into the hands of the One who understands us best.
