God's displeasure with the census is swift and severe; He strikes Israel with a plague.

Context

God responds to David's census with visible, immediate displeasure. The entire nation, not just David, enters a season of judgment.

What Does 1 Chronicles 21:7 Mean?

The judgment comes immediately. 'God was displeased' (not a distant, future anger, but present disapproval), and the consequence follows: 'he smote Israel.' The word 'smote' suggests a blow, a sudden affliction. What is meant by the striking is revealed in the verses ahead: a pestilence that will fell tens of thousands. The point is unmistakable: David's pride in numbering his people has triggered judgment upon the entire nation. Those seventy thousand men whose deaths are recorded did not participate in David's pride, yet they suffer for it. This is one of the harshest realities in Scripture: the sins of leaders can bring consequences upon the whole community.

Yet God's displeasure is not the final word. The 'smiting' is divine discipline, not abandonment. It is the way of a covenant God to judge sin in order to call His people back. The speed of the judgment, the clarity of the cause-and-effect, and the limitation of the plague all point to a God who is present, engaged, and ultimately merciful, even in correction. Israel's suffering is real and tragic, but it is not meaningless; it is designed to awaken David and the nation to their true condition.

In the Original Language

smote (nakah), 'to strike, hit, wound' -- God's action is direct and forceful, not mere abstraction

Application

Leadership is a sacred trust. Our choices as parents, managers, or public figures reverberate beyond ourselves. When we lead others astray through pride or poor judgment, we invite judgment not only for ourselves but potentially for those who follow us. This should sober us and drive us to seek wisdom and humility in how we exercise authority.
