The Context of 1 Chronicles 6:40
After Heman's pedigree closes at verse 38 with Levi and Israel, verse 39 turns to his brother Asaph, who stood on his right hand, and starts a second ascent: Asaph, Berachiah, Shimea. Verse 40 carries it through Michael, Baaseiah, and Malchiah, and verses 41 to 43 continue through Ethni, Zerah, Adaiah, Ethan, Zimmah, Shimei, Jahath, and Gershom to Levi. Verse 44 then gives the third choir leader, Ethan of the sons of Merari, on the left hand. Three Levite branches are represented in the singing.
What Does 1 Chronicles 6:40 Mean?
Each clause here is identical in shape, the son of followed by a name, so the verse reads like the rungs of a ladder. Michael, Baaseiah, and Malchiah all include a divine element or title within them, and Michael frames a question, asking who is like God. Malchiah connects to the word for king. Nothing else is said about any of the three, and the absence of comment is itself informative, since the chronicler's purpose is continuity rather than biography. He needs an unbroken chain from Asaph to Levi, and these names supply three of its links.
Placing Asaph on Heman's right hand and Ethan on his left describes an arrangement, and the pedigrees show that each man represented a different son of Levi. Heman came through Kohath, Asaph through Gershom, Ethan through Merari. All three branches of the tribe stood together in the service of song, which matches the way the chapter later distributes Levite cities among all the tribes. Israel's worship was designed to include the whole family of Levi rather than one favoured house. This verse belongs to the middle of the evidence for that design.
