What Does 1 Chronicles 9:2 Mean?
Having named the exile, the chronicler turns to the homecoming. He lists the groups who first took up their old possessions: the people at large, the priests who served at the altar, the Levites who assisted them, and the Nethinim, servants given to help at the house of God.
Notice the order. The restored community is built around worship from the very first. Land and homes mattered, but the heart of the returning people was the service of God. A nation rebuilt itself by gathering again around the place where the LORD met them. So too the people of God in every age are knit together not merely by shared territory but by shared worship of the One who brought them home.
