What Does 1 Corinthians 1:29 Mean?
Paul states the purpose behind God's choosing of the lowly: so that no human being might boast in His presence. This short verse is the goal of all that precedes it.
If God had chosen the wise and mighty, they might imagine they had earned their place. Instead He chooses in such a way that every mouth is stopped and every boast silenced. Before the holy God, no one can stand on their own merit. Salvation is grace from first to last, leaving us nothing to glory in but Him. This humbling is also a freedom, for it releases us from the exhausting need to prove ourselves worthy.
