What Does 1 Corinthians 9:14 Mean?
Having drawn on common life, the law, and the temple, Paul now states the principle directly and traces it to the highest authority. The Lord has ordained that gospel preachers should live of the gospel, just as priests lived of the temple. This is not Paul's preference but the Lord's own appointment.
The verse echoes Jesus' instruction that the laborer is worthy of his hire. It establishes that supporting those who proclaim Christ is part of God's design, woven into the life of His people. Yet the weight of this declaration makes Paul's own refusal of support, which he turns to next, all the more striking. He surrenders a right the Lord Himself granted him, out of love for the gospel and for those he serves.
