An aging John writes to believers he calls 'little children,' churches he has loved and watched over for years. Some who once gathered with them had left and begun teaching that Jesus was not truly the Christ come in the flesh (verses 19 and 22), and John names that spirit plainly so the family he loves will not be shaken by it.
