What Does 1 John 2:18 Mean?
John tells his little children it is the last time. They had heard that an antichrist would come, and now there are already many antichrists. Their presence is itself a sign that the final age has begun.
The last days are not only a distant future but a present reality, opened by the coming of Christ. Opposition to Him is to be expected, even from those who once seemed to belong. Rather than alarm, John gives discernment. The rise of many who oppose Christ confirms the truth of what was foretold, and calls believers to hold fast to the One they know is true.
In the Original Language
antichristos (ἀντίχριστος), 'antichrist' -- one who opposes and stands against Christ, denying who He is.
