The old commandment is also new, made fresh in Christ, as the darkness passes and the true light shines.

What Does 1 John 2:8 Mean?

Having called it old, John now calls the commandment new, for it is made fresh and living in Christ and in His people. It is true in Him and in them, because the darkness is passing and the true light now shines.

The command to love is ancient, yet ever new, because Christ has given it new power and a new pattern in His own life. With His coming a new day has dawned; the old night of sin gives way to His light. To love as He loved is to walk in that light. The commandment is renewed every time it is lived out by those in whom Christ shines.
