Whoever abides in Christ does not go on in sin; persistent sin shows one has not truly known Him.

What Does 1 John 3:6 Mean?

John links abiding and holiness. Whoever abides in Christ does not keep on sinning, and whoever persists in sin has neither seen nor known Him. A settled life of sin cannot coexist with abiding in the sinless One.

This is not a claim of flawless perfection, for John has already provided for the believer who stumbles. Rather it describes direction and dwelling. To abide in Christ is to be drawn away from sin's dominion. A life given over to sin reveals a heart that has not truly come to know Him. John calls his readers to remain in Christ, where sin loses its hold and holiness grows.
