Elijah sets up the biggest contest ever: the real God against a pretend god, on top of a mountain, with everyone watching. Whoever answers with fire is the true God.
Today's Story
Many of God's people had started worshiping a pretend god named Baal. Elijah wanted to show everyone the truth. So he called the whole nation up to a mountain.
“Let's settle this,” Elijah said. “Build an altar for Baal, and I'll build one for the Lord. Each side prays. The God who answers with fire from heaven — He is the real God!”
The prophets of Baal went first. They shouted to Baal all morning. They danced. They cried out louder and louder, all day long. But nothing happened. No voice. No fire. Just silence — because Baal wasn't real.
Then it was Elijah's turn. To make it extra clear, he had people pour water all over his altar — once, twice, three times — until it was soaking wet and puddles filled the trench around it. No way that would ever burn.
Then Elijah prayed a simple prayer. “Lord, let everyone here know that You are God.” And WHOOSH — fire fell from heaven! It burned up the offering, the wood, the stones, and even the water in the trench!
The people fell on their faces and cried out, “The Lord — He is God! The Lord — He is God!” And then, after the long dry months, God sent rain pouring down on the land again.
A Big Word
Memory Verse
Talk About It
- The prophets shouted to Baal all day and nothing happened, because Baal wasn't real. How can we know that the Lord is the real, true God?
- Elijah poured water all over his altar to make it extra hard — so everyone would know only God could do it. Why do you think he did that?
- When the fire fell, the people shouted, “The Lord — He is God!” What's one true thing about God you'd want to shout out loud?
