Ahab orders Micaiah to be taken and held in custody by Amon and Joash.

Context

Ahab, rather than heeding Micaiah's prophecy, orders him taken into custody and held by city officials.

What Does 1 Kings 22:26 Mean?

Ahab will not be changed by Micaiah's witness. Having asked for truth and received it, having heard both the vision of the scattered army and the revelation of the heavenly council's judgment against him, Ahab chooses to silence the prophet rather than heed him. He orders his guards: take Micaiah away. Carry him to Amon, the governor of the city, and to Joash, the king's son. The prophet is to be held in custody. Not killed, not yet. But removed from the court, out of sight, out of earshot. Ahab will not kill the man who speaks for God, but neither will he listen.

This is the choice available to every person who encounters truth: we can repent, or we can silence. Ahab chooses silence. He will proceed to battle surrounded by the 400 prophets who tell him what he wants to hear. Micaiah will be imprisoned, his words locked away with him. Yet even in this, God's purposes are not thwarted. Micaiah's imprisonment is itself a sign to any who have the eyes to see: which prophets are welcome in the king's presence, and which must be removed?

Application

Silencing truth does not change the truth. When we refuse to listen to God's word, we only imprison ourselves in illusion.
