Having purified themselves by obeying the truth, believers are to love one another sincerely and fervently from the heart.

What Does 1 Peter 1:22 Mean?

Peter says obedience to the truth has already cleansed his readers and aimed them at sincere love. Purity of soul is not an end in itself; it flows outward toward the brethren.

The love he urges is unfeigned, without pretense, and fervent, stretched out and earnest. A purified heart is meant to overflow into the most ordinary and demanding task: loving the people right beside you. Peter treats this love not as optional warmth but as the very evidence that the truth has done its cleansing work within.

In the Original Language

anypokritos (ἀνυπόκριτος), 'unfeigned' -- without hypocrisy or mask, genuine through and through.
