Saul, persuaded to let David go, clothes him in his own royal armor: a brass helmet on his head and a coat of mail upon his body. The king offers the best protection he knows, the gear of conventional warfare.
Saul means well, but he tries to send David out by the world's methods, armored like the giant himself. The instinct is to meet strength with strength, brass with brass. Yet God's victory will not come by such means. The borrowed armor, however fine, is not the channel of deliverance, and David will soon set it aside for something far smaller and far surer.
