What Does 1 Samuel 2:12 Mean?
The narrative sets a deliberate contrast. Samuel ministers before the Lord; Eli's sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are called 'sons of Belial' and are said not to know the Lord. They held the priesthood but were strangers to the God they served.
To not know the Lord, though serving at his altar, is a sobering condition. Position is no substitute for a living relationship with God. These men had every outward advantage of their priestly office, yet their hearts were far from him. The contrast warns that nearness to holy things means nothing without a heart that truly knows and honors God.
