Paul greets Timothy as a true son in the faith and prays grace, mercy, and peace over him from the Father and the Lord Jesus.

What Does 1 Timothy 1:2 Mean?

Timothy was not Paul's child by birth but by the gospel; Paul had led him to faith and watched it grow. The warmth of 'my own son' tells us this is a letter between men who love each other.

Grace, mercy, and peace are gifts that come down from God the Father and from Jesus Christ. Paul does not wish Timothy success or comfort first, but these three: the favor he has not earned, the tenderness that meets his weakness, and the settled peace that follows.

In the Original Language

charis (χάρις), 'grace' -- undeserved favor and kindness freely given by God.
