These deceivers speak lies in hypocrisy, their consciences deadened as if seared.

What Does 1 Timothy 4:2 Mean?

Paul describes the source of the false teaching: liars who wear a mask of piety, whose consciences have been burned numb.

A seared conscience no longer feels the wrong it does. This is the danger of persisting in deception, that the inner voice meant to warn us falls silent. Paul exposes the hypocrisy so the church will not be fooled by an appearance of holiness.
