What Does 2 Corinthians 8:7 Mean?
Paul lists the Corinthians' genuine strengths: faith, 'utterance' or speech, knowledge, 'diligence' or earnestness, and love. They 'abound,' overflow, in these gifts. Then he adds one more arena in which they should overflow, 'this grace also,' meaning the grace of giving toward the saints.
Paul places generosity alongside faith and knowledge as a true mark of spiritual maturity. A church may be rich in eloquence and understanding yet poor in open-handedness, and the picture would be incomplete. Love that does not reach the hand is unfinished love. So Paul gently calls them to round out their gifts: let the same abounding that marks your faith and speech mark your giving too. Grace received is meant to become grace shared.
