The elder has much more to say but hopes to come in person, so that their joy may be complete.

What Does 2 John 1:12 Mean?

As the letter draws to a close, the elder explains its brevity. He has 'many things' on his heart, but he would rather not commit them all to 'paper and ink.' Instead he hopes to come and 'speak face to face.' Some words are better carried by presence than by a page.

His longing is for shared and 'full' joy. The warmth of the opening returns here at the end; the elder writes not as a distant official but as one who yearns to be with the people he loves. The reader is reminded that the Christian life is meant for real fellowship — that letters and teaching point toward presence, and that joy reaches its fullness when believers are gathered together.
