Jehu invites Jehoshaphat to witness his passionate devotion to removing idolatry from Israel.

Context

Jehu has just destroyed the line of Ahab and is now recruiting allies in his larger campaign against Baal worship. King Jehoshaphat of Judah has come to meet with him.

What Does 2 Kings 10:16 Mean?

Jehu's words have a magnetic pull: Come and see my zeal for the LORD. He is not hiding his intentions or offering a gentle proposal. His intensity is visible enough that Jehoshaphat accepts the invitation to ride in his chariot, placing his trust in Jehu's religious conviction. There is something compelling about a leader who owns his passion without apology.

Yet we know from Scripture that zeal without discernment can become destructive. Jehu's fervor is real, but his methods will soon veer into deception. We see in him the eternal tension: how do we honor genuine concern for God's truth while refusing to let it justify cruelty or dishonesty? Christ shows us the answer through a holiness that demands justice without ever resorting to subterfuge.

In the Original Language

qina (קינאה), 'zeal' -- a burning intensity of devotion or jealousy, the same word used for God's zeal to protect His people's loyalty.

Application

Our passion for what is right is not itself evidence that our methods are right. Invite others to witness genuine conviction, but examine whether your zeal is drawing people closer to God or pushing them through deception.
