The narrator summarizes that Jehu has succeeded in eradicating Baal worship from the kingdom.

Context

This verse marks the completion of Jehu's mission. Whatever the moral complexity of his methods, the result is clear: Baal worship, which had dominated Israel for generations, is gone.

What Does 2 Kings 10:28 Mean?

It is a sentence of completion and finality. Baal is destroyed out of Israel. This is objectively true and objectively important. A false god, worshipped at the cost of justice and covenant faithfulness, has been removed. In the most straightforward sense, Jehu has done what God wanted done. The mission is accomplished.

And yet we cannot read these words in isolation from what comes next. Because the verse that follows begins with 'Howbeit'—however, nevertheless, but. The text itself signals that we are about to learn that Jehu's victory is partial, that his obedience is mixed. This is the structure of his reign: tremendous success in one area (destroying Baal), complete failure in another (maintaining the golden calf worship at Bethel and Dan). It teaches us that you can be right about one thing and wrong about another, successful in one calling and unfaithful in another. Only Christ was wholly faithful in every detail.

Application

Rejoice when falsehood is removed from your life, but do not assume that partial obedience is the same as faithfulness. Ask God to show you the areas where you have deceived yourself about following Him.
