God affirms Jehu's destruction of Ahab's house and promises that his descendants will rule for four generations.

Context

Despite the moral complexity of Jehu's methods and his incomplete obedience, God speaks a clear word of approval for what he has accomplished against the house of Ahab.

What Does 2 Kings 10:30 Mean?

The LORD said unto Jehu. This is a word of affirmation, and we must not minimize it. Jehu has done what is right in God's eyes. He has executed the judgment against Ahab that was declared through Elijah decades before. His children will sit on Israel's throne for four generations—a blessing of dynastic stability that was not guaranteed to any king of Israel's northern kingdom. God is pleased.

Yet notice what God commends: executing judgment against Ahab's house, not the methods Jehu used to do it. God does not praise the deception, the slaughter of Baal worshippers, the desecration of the temple. God praises the outcome: that Ahab's line was ended and the judgment was fulfilled. This teaches us that God can accomplish His purposes even through means we would not choose. But it does not mean that the means were sanctified by the outcome. Jehu is blessed despite his cruelty, not because of it. And his incomplete obedience—his failure to remove the golden calves—will eventually bring the judgment back down on his descendants. Grace is not cheap, even when God speaks approval.

Application

Know that God sees your faithful work even when your methods have been flawed. But do not take God's approval of one area of obedience as license to disobey in another. Pursue wholeness in your faithfulness.
