2 Kings 10:36 Meaning and Explanation

Twenty-eight years. That is not a short reign. Jehu had time to build, to establish, to see his children grow and to see his name settle into memory. He outlasted many contemporaries, ruled long enough to seem stable and successful. In the ancient Near East, longevity on the throne was itself a mark of divine favor. Yet the narrator does not use the length of the reign to commend Jehu. Instead, the facts are stated plainly, almost neutrally, and the reader is left to hold them alongside the earlier verdict: here was a king of considerable tenure whose heart was divided.

This teaches us something crucial about God's patience and about the nature of judgment. The Lord does not always cut short in obvious ways. Jehu was not overthrown; his dynasty did not collapse with him; he was honored with burial in the capital. Yet the incompleteness of his devotion set a trajectory that would define the era that followed. Sometimes God allows us a long reign, long enough to see the harvest of our choices.
