Context
Jehu's dynasty (see 2 Kings 9-10) received a seventy-year covenant promise that was now expiring; Zachariah was the fourth king after Jehu, and his death fulfilled God's word.
What Does 2 Kings 15:12 Mean?
The writer pauses to show us the hand of God at work beneath the surface. The word that the Lord spoke to Jehu, 'Your sons shall sit on the throne of Israel unto the fourth generation,' is now being fulfilled, not as comfortable promise but as boundary and ending. Jehu had been anointed to execute God's judgment on the house of Ahab (see 2 Kings 9). His descendants were granted a dynasty, four reigns, and no more. Zachariah is the fourth; with him, the measure is full.
This verse is profound in its restraint. We are watching the unfolding of divine purpose across a century. Jehu had done terrible things, but he had been God's instrument, and his faithfulness (2 Kings 10:30 promises him blessing to the fourth generation) is being honored with precision. The promise is being kept, and now it is being concluded. God is faithful to His word, whether the word is blessing or boundary.
In the Original Language
davar (Hebrew, 'word'), the authoritative utterance of God that shapes history; once spoken, it accomplishes what it intends (see Isaiah 55:11).
Application
God's word spoken in one generation comes to pass in another. We are part of a covenant story that extends across time; our obedience or disobedience bears fruit in ways we may not live to see.
