2 Kings 15:38 Meaning and Explanation

After sixteen years of righteous reign, Jotham comes to the end of his earthly story. He 'slept with his fathers', the gentle biblical expression for death that suggests rest and the joining of the community of the faithful who have gone before. He was buried 'in the city of David', the royal necropolis where the kings of Judah were laid, a mark of honor and legitimacy. Yet there is a poignancy here: Jotham leaves his kingdom in the midst of external threat, facing enemies he has not defeated, bequeathing to his son not a time of peace but a time of crisis. His faithfulness is not rewarded with a long rest or a secure realm.

The final word of our passage is ominous: 'Ahaz his son reigned in his stead.' We know from what follows that Ahaz will turn away from the Lord in dramatic fashion, will make alliances that compromise Judah's dependence on God, and will introduce pagan practices into the temple itself. The contrast between father and son will become one of the great spiritual tragedies of the monarchy. Yet Jotham departs the scene with his integrity intact, his conscience clear before God, even as his successor will choose a different path. This teaches us that our obedience is not diminished by the choices our children or successors make after us. We answer for our own faithfulness, not theirs.
