What Does 2 Peter 1:14 Mean?
Peter speaks plainly of his coming death. He will soon "put off" his tent — lay aside the body like a garment removed. He knows this because "our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me," likely recalling Jesus's own words to him about the kind of death he would face. The aged apostle writes with the end clearly in view.
There is striking calm here. Peter does not speak of death with dread but as the laying aside of a temporary covering, a transition the Lord Himself foretold. His confidence rests on Christ's word to him. This is how faith faces mortality: not pretending death away, but meeting it as something Jesus already knows and has spoken to. Peter's whole urgency to remind and stir up flows from this settled awareness. Knowing the tent is coming down, he labors all the harder for the good of others. Death holds no terror for the one who belongs to the risen Lord.
