Peter will make every effort so that, even after his death, his readers can keep these truths in memory.

What Does 2 Peter 1:15 Mean?

Peter looks beyond his own lifetime. He will "endeavour" — make diligent effort — so that even after his "decease," his readers will be "able" to recall these things always. The word for decease is literally exodus, a departure, the same term used of a great journey out. Peter is providing for a future he will not see.

A faithful shepherd thinks past his own years. Peter wants the truth to outlast him, so he labors to leave behind something durable for the next generation of believers. Calling his death an "exodus" frames it not as an ending but as a passage, a going-forth like Israel's journey toward promise. His concern is entirely outward: that others would keep remembering after he is gone. This is love that plans ahead, investing in people one may never meet. The truths of Christ are worth preserving carefully, handed down so that those who come later can hold them fast.

In the Original Language

exodos (ἔξοδος), 'decease' — a departure or going-out; Peter's word for his death frames it as a journey onward.
