What Does 2 Samuel 11:2 Mean?
In the cool of evening David rises and walks the flat roof of his palace, the highest point in the city. From there his eye falls on a woman washing herself, and the narrator tells us plainly that she was very beautiful to look upon.
The seeing was not the sin; the lingering was. Temptation often arrives uninvited, but it asks whether we will turn away or turn toward. Here a glance becomes a gaze, and a gaze will become a plan. The same Lord who later teaches that sin is conceived in the heart's desire calls us to guard the first look, to flee rather than to feed what we know will harm us.
