What Does 2 Samuel 3:21 Mean?
Abner promises to assemble all Israel to make a covenant with David so he can reign over the whole land. David sends him away peacefully, the agreement sealed and the path to unity seemingly secure.
The phrase he went in peace is repeated deliberately in the verses that follow, for it is about to be tragically broken. At this moment all is well: reconciliation is at hand and the kingdom nearly whole. David has acted in good faith and sent his former enemy away unharmed, a king ruling by peace rather than by the sword.
