What Does 2 Samuel 7:13 Mean?

The promise names two things the son will receive. He shall build an house for God's name, the temple Solomon would raise in Jerusalem, and God will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. The building David wanted to give will indeed be built, but by another, and crowned with a far greater promise of permanence.

The little word for ever lifts the verse above Solomon's reign, for no earthly throne lasts without end. Here the promise reaches toward the Son of David whose kingdom truly endures forever. The angel Gabriel would later echo these very words to Mary, declaring that her child would receive the throne of David and reign without end.
