John commends Demetrius, who is well spoken of by everyone and by the truth itself, and adds his own trustworthy testimony on his behalf.

What Does 3 John 1:12 Mean?

Against the shadow of Diotrephes, John holds up a man worthy of honor named Demetrius, who may have carried this very letter. Demetrius has a good report from "all men," from "the truth itself," and from John and his companions. Three witnesses agree, and his life rings true with the gospel he professes.

To be commended by "the truth itself" means his conduct matches the standard of Christ, who is the truth. John adds his own word and reminds the readers they know his testimony is reliable. Here is the better way: a reputation built on faithful living and confirmed by those who walk in the truth. A good name, honestly earned in Christ, is a treasure and an encouragement to the whole church.
