Because these workers serve for Christ's sake, believers ought to welcome them and so become partners in the work of the truth.

What Does 3 John 1:8 Mean?

John draws the lesson from what he has said. Since these travelers go out for Christ and refuse the world's support, the church "ought" to receive them, an obligation rooted in love rather than mere custom. To welcome them is to share in their mission.

The beautiful phrase is "fellowhelpers to the truth." By opening our homes and resources, we labor alongside those who preach, becoming co-workers in the spreading of the gospel. The truth advances not only through those who speak it but through those who quietly sustain them. This verse dignifies every supporting role in the kingdom and assures us that hospitality offered for Christ is genuine partnership in His cause.

In the Original Language

synergos (συνεργός), "fellowhelper" — a co-worker laboring together toward the same end, the root of the English word synergy.
