What Does Acts 16:2 Mean?
Before Paul invites Timothy to join the mission, Luke records his reputation: the brethren of his home town and of neighboring Iconium speak well of him. His faith has been watched over time in ordinary congregational life, not announced by himself.
Character is proved at home before it is trusted abroad. Timothy's quiet faithfulness in small things prepared him for greater service, after the pattern Jesus taught: he that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much (Luke 16:10). A good name among God's people is built slowly and carries far.
