What Does Acts 19:6 Mean?
The gift follows at once. Paul lays his hands on the newly baptized, the Holy Ghost comes on them, and they speak with tongues and prophesy, as believers did at Pentecost and at the house of Cornelius (Acts 2:4; 10:44-46). Ephesus now holds its own witness that the promise of the Father has reached the heart of Asia.
What these men had not even heard of (v. 2), they now receive. Through the laying on of Paul's hands God bestows His Spirit, and the evidence is immediate: mouths opened in praise and prophecy. The Lord brings honest seekers the whole way in, and the Christ whom John announced is still the One who baptizes with the Holy Ghost.
