Acts 2:13 Meaning and Explanation

Not everyone wonders; some sneer. Where many hear their own languages, the mockers hear only noise and reach for the easiest explanation — too much new wine, and that early in the morning.

The same event divides its witnesses: amazement in some, ridicule in others. Mockery is often the refuge of those unwilling to ask what a thing means, for a joke costs less than a question. The work of God has always been open to scorn from those determined to explain it away. Yet even the scoffing serves the story — it gives Peter his opening, and the accusation becomes the doorway to the first gospel sermon.
