What Does Acts 20:22 Mean?
The farewell turns from past to future. Paul is "bound" already — held inwardly, compelled in spirit toward Jerusalem before any Roman chain touches his hands (19:21). He knows the direction God has set; he does not know the particulars waiting at the end of it.
Obedience rarely comes with an itinerary. Paul knows the One who leads him better than he knows what awaits him, and that is enough. So Abraham went out, "not knowing whither he went" (Heb 11:8); so the Lord Jesus set his face toward a city that would cost him everything. Faith walks forward on God's leading, not on a disclosed future.
