What Does Acts 20:25 Mean?
The sentence falls heavily in the room: as far as Paul knows, this parting is final. He describes his years among them as going about "preaching the kingdom of God" — the same message Jesus preached (Luke 4:43) and the note on which the book of Acts will close (28:31).
Paul does not soften the parting, and the weeping at v. 37 shows what the honesty cost. But his confidence does not rest on his own staying. He preached the kingdom — God's own reign — and "thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom" (Ps 145:13). Messengers come and go at their King's sending; the King has promised his people, "I am with you alway" (Matt 28:20).
