Words give way to prayer. Paul has warned, charged, and commended; now he does the last thing left to do — he kneels, and the whole circle of elders kneels with him by the harbor at Miletus.
Everything he has asked of them — watchfulness, purity, costly care for the flock — lies beyond human strength, so the meeting ends where dependence begins: on knees. Jesus likewise closed his own farewell by praying for the men he was leaving (John 17).
